Nancy Margolis Gallery
February 15 - March 31, 2018
Nancy Margolis Gallery is pleased to announce Sylvia Naimark’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, Dog Secret. The show will be on view February 15th through March 31st, 2018, with an opening reception on Thursday, February 15th from 6pm until 8pm.
Swedish artist Sylvia Naimark paints worlds imbued with mysticism, sublimity, and quietness. Dog Secret comprises 23 oil paintings that masterfully blend figuration and abstraction to conjure impressions of the familiar and the foreign. Naimark’s work from this series can be divided into three distinct categories: intimate studies of old mementos; depictions of transient figures dwarfed by vast undefined spaces; and people and animals interacting with one another in uncanny ways. When looked at as a whole, these paintings provide hints or glimpses of larger narratives that the viewer can construct herself.

The paintings by the four accomplished artists in this exhibition were selected for their engaging personal expression, and styles. Their genre, unalike and varied, runs from realism, abstraction, narration, symbolism, patterning, and adornment.

Walk is the title of a painting by Sylvia Naimark, as well as the name of her new exhibition with paintings, focusing mainly on the last few years but extending over the last decade.
Walk is a word of various meanings. Just like the paintings themselves, it contains different layers of content and changes in time perspectives, where everything is simultaneous. Then is now and now is then. Time and space reach other dimensions.
Sylvia Naimark’s artistry gives rise to existential questions. Each individual work relates to another. They are solitaries that together conduct a conversation with each other and with the viewer. We are invited into another world where the pictures reach outside of themselves in a state where feelings and ideas meet.
The starting point of the project is Landskrona’s art gallery, and continues to Galleri Astley in Bergslagen and will then be shown at Jakobsberg art gallery outside Stockholm at the end of 2010.
